Measuring the average outcome and inequality effects of segregation in the presence of social spillovers1

چکیده
In this paper we provide a nonparametric treatment of identification in models with social spillovers. We consider a setting with ‘high’ and ‘low’ type individuals. Individual outcomes depend upon the fraction of high types in one’s group. We refer to this dependence as a social spillover or peer group effect. We define estimands measuring local and global spillover strength as well as the outcome and inequality effects of increasing segregation (by type) across groups. We relate our estimands to the theory of sorting in the presence of social externalities. JEL Classification: C14, C31, D62, I21

Econometric methods for the analysis of assignment problems in the presence of complementarity and social spillovers1
Concern over the distributional effects of policies which induce changes in peer group structure, or ‘associational redistributions’ (Durlauf, 1996c), motivates a substantial body of theoretical and empirical research in economics, sociology, psychology, and education. A growing collection of econometric methods for characterizing the effects of such policies are now available. This chapter sur...
متن کاملNber Working Paper Series Measuring the Effects of Segregation in the Presence of Social Spillovers: a Nonparametric Approach
In this paper we nonparametrically analyze the effects of reallocating individuals across social groups in the presence of social spillovers. Individuals are either 'high' or 'low' types. Own outcomes may vary with the fraction of high types in one's social group. We characterize the average outcome and inequality effects of small increases in segregation by type. We also provide a measure of a...
